‘The Latest:’ Planes & Poetry by Jade

Editor’s Note:

The day that Jade sent me this poem, I found an email in my inbox with the following words. I had been wondering when she would write again and hoping she would. I love Jade’s words, maybe because I can’t write like she; maybe because she finds a beautiful way to be vulnerable. And, I like including this content in the blog, because it is unique and special; authentic and true. I titled this ‘The Latest;’ because, well…that’s what Jade titled the email. Enjoy— KM

The Latest.

I’ve been trying to not write about you for weeks.
But words have a way of being born, regardless.

I am pouring tea 40,000 feet up and you are dodging bullets 2,300 miles away,

behind a shield that doesn’t protect you.
I don’t sleep much.
But we don’t talk about that.

We were just kids.
It was not our time.
I married the wrong guy.
You just about choke on that understatement.
And we laugh the way only old lovers can.
He didn’t even know you wrote!
Well, you should probably stop moving girls to Boston…
We continue to one-up and even the low blows are funny at this point
healing has happened.

We should get married, Jade.
You’d hate me within a week.
I’m still a girl that believes unfortunate things said to her.
But I want to unpack my bags;
Belong. Be witnessed.
You’re still a guy that doesn’t muse on past disasters.
I know how this song goes.

But you’ve made a loyal friend all these years
and time has a way of making that shine so bright.
(Bright as a picture of you holding a picture of me
in the pocket of my blue jeans)
